Get rid of the NHS Smartcard?

I’ve often wondered why in these days of 2FA and app authenticators why we are so reliant on physical smartcards. As I see it not only do they mean we have to buy more expensive custom keyboards or USB smart card readers which must be a waste of money, the whole process of updating them and managing them is a pain. I had to take my card to a person the other day and stand there while they plug it into their machine and updated it.

My bank, my Office 365 subscription, even my share account use either an SMS to my mobile or Google authenticator or similar.

Well, this time I don’t need to come up with an idea – I’ve come across a Virtual Smartcard that appears to be a good idea.
